Quelques personnages illustres à Samarcande
Samarcande se trouve au bout
du monde pour les Européens et même le Proche Orient. Pourtant elle fut
contactée par des populations très hétérogènes, nomades comme les Scythes, les
turco-mongols, ou sédentaires comme les Gréco-macédoniens, les Parthes, les
Perses, puis les Chinois. Les artistes, les philosophes et scientifiques, les
pélerins, et bien sur les marchands s'y sont rendus pour des raisons diverses.
Parmi ceux-ci des personnages illustres par leurs connaissances tels que :
Omar Khayyam (1038-1131) philosophe, mathématicien astronome et
poète persan y séjourne de 1072 à 1074 avant de s'installer à Ispahan à la
demande du sultan Malik Shah qui lui confie la charge de l'observatoire. Ses découvertes
sont connues du monde entier, et ses poèmes empreints de méditations ont eu un
grand succès au Moyen-Orient et bien plus tard en Europe.

Ibn Battuta (1304-1377) grand voyageur venu du Maghreb, part de
Sarai en Crimée pour arriver en Transoxiane. Il maudit les ravages causés par
Gengis Khan à Boukhara et Samarcande dont il constate les ruines. Erudit en
Histoire et en langues, ses compte-rendus de voyage font autorité.
Ibn Khaldoum (1332-1406) qui a écrit une « Introduction à
l'Histoire Universelle » où il compare l'histoire et la civilisation des
Perses et des Arabes, et raconte la poussée vers la Chine par les musulmans
Ommeyades en 715.
Il est aussi le biographe de
Tamerlan.
Ulugh Beg (1394-1449) petit-fils de Tamerlan lequel a fait de
Samarcande sa capitale, est passionné de Sciences et d'Astronomie en
particulier. Il a fait bâtir à Samarcande un observatoire géant à trois étages
doté d'une sorte de sextant géant permettant de mesurer la distance aux
étoiles. Après son assassinat cet observatoire a été détruit mais en reste
encore les fondations.
Ibn Sina dit Avicenne (980-1037) mort un an avant la naissance d'Omar
Khayyam, qui fut son disciple par la lecture de ses œuvres.
Son Canon de la Médecine est
son œuvre la plus connue qui décrit les symptômes de toutes les maladies à son
époque. Elle fut rapportée en Europe par les Croisés et fit longtemps autorité.
Mais
c'est aussi un savant universel, qui s'intéresse entre autres à la logique, les
mathématiques, l'astrologie et la poésie.
